Crater Lake National Park Rim Drive Overlook
Crater Lake fills a caldera formed 7,700 years ago when Mount Mazama collapsed. The lake reaches 1,943 feet deep — the deepest in the US — and maintains an intense blue color from its depth and purity. Rim Drive provides access to numerous overlooks, with the most popular being Rim Village and Watchman Overlook. Winter closes much of Rim Drive, but the south entrance and Rim Village stay accessible year-round.
The full 33-mile rim loop typically opens by July and closes with first heavy snows, usually October-November. Elevation ranges from 6,000-8,000 feet, so weather changes fast. Park entry requires a fee, and summer crowds peak July-September. Cell service is spotty throughout the park.
