Wakhan Corridor — Little Pamir River Terrace Dispersed Camp
This is the real Wakhan: a narrow strip of Afghanistan pinched between the Panj River and the Hindu Kush, with Tajikistan a stone’s throw across the water and Pakistan visible on the ridgelines to the south. The river terraces along the Wakhan Valley floor are the only practical camping ground on this route — flat gravel benches above the floodplain, exposed to wind, with the kind of silence that makes you double-check your sat-comm is on. No facilities, no signage, no other overlanders. Expect yaks, Wakhi herders, and a sky full of stars at 10,000+ feet.
The track between Ishkashim and Sarhad-e-Broghil is a rough dirt and rock road requiring 4WD and high clearance — a modified rig with recovery gear is strongly advised. The route is seasonal; July through September is the practical window before snowfall closes the upper passes. Water from the river must be treated. Foreign overlanders require a Wakhan permit and an Afghan guide — verify current security and permit requirements before entry.
