Ishkashim — Panj River Guesthouse Camp
Ishkashim sits at the confluence of the Wakhan and Panj rivers, right on the Afghan-Tajik border, and it’s the last place you’ll find anything resembling an organized overnight before the corridor road takes over. Several family guesthouses around town offer courtyard camping or basic rooftop bedrolls — the kind of setup where you park inside a walled compound, sleep under stars, and share bread with whoever else is passing through. It’s not a formal campground in any Western sense, but it’s the accepted overlander staging point for Wakhan departures and arrivals.
Access is via the paved road from Faizabad or the rough dirt track from Zebak. Expect no reliable electricity, no flush toilets, and intermittent cell signal via Afghan Telecom towers. Border zone regulations apply — carry all documentation. Best season is May through September; the pass roads upstream close hard in winter.
Last real stop before the Wakhan swallows you.
