Tsauchab River — Naukluft Plateau Southern Flats Dispersed Camp
Where the Tsauchab River cuts south off the Naukluft Plateau, the riverbed widens into a broad sand flat ringed by weathered dolomite outcrops and sparse camelthorn acacias. This is raw Namibian wilderness — no facilities, no fences, no other rigs. The Namib-Naukluft National Park permits dispersed camping in designated zones along this corridor, and the flat sandy ground makes for relatively comfortable sleeping. You’ll share the water course with gemsbok, springbok, and the occasional leopard track in the sand. Nights are cold and utterly clear — the Milky Way out here is the kind that makes you forget what you were doing.
Access requires a valid NWR permit obtained in advance from Windhoek or Sesriem — no permit, no entry, full stop. The track in from the plateau spine is rocky 4WD territory; approach from the Sesriem side on the C27 and C36. Carry all water — the riverbed is dry outside of rare flood events. Best April through September; summer heat and flash flood risk make the river corridor dangerous December through February.
Sand, silence, and gemsbok below the plateau.
