Superior National Forest Echo Trail Mile 8 Dispersed Sites

Dispersed Camping

A handful of pull-off camping spots scattered along the Echo Trail about 8 miles northeast of Ely, tucked between small lakes and mixed hardwood forest. Sites range from simple roadside clearings to more secluded spots requiring a short walk through the timber. Most accommodate one or two vehicles with space for tents, though a few can handle larger rigs on level ground. Expect company during peak canoe season (May through September) as this stretch serves paddlers heading into the BWCA.

Access via the well-maintained Echo Trail (County Road 116) — gravel surface with some washboard sections but suitable for any vehicle. No facilities or services, so pack everything in and pack it out. Winter access possible but road isn’t plowed regularly past mile 6.
