Superior National Forest Echo Trail
The Echo Trail (County Road 116) runs 50 miles from Ely north to the Gunflint Trail, following an old logging route through dense boreal forest. It’s well-maintained gravel with occasional rough sections after spring breakup. The trail accesses over 20 BWCAW entry points, remote lakes, and several Forest Service campgrounds. Traffic is light except during peak BWCAW season in July and August.
Start at the north end of Ely off Highway 169. No services for 40+ miles once you leave town, so fuel up and check your spare tire. Winter access depends on plowing — typically closed December through March.
