Spotted Wolf Canyon Petroglyphs Bureau of Land Management

Point of Interest

Spotted Wolf Canyon holds some of the most pristine and extensive petroglyphs in the Four Corners region, carved into dark desert varnish by ancestral Puebloan peoples over centuries. The main panel stretches nearly 100 feet along a sheltered alcove, featuring hundreds of bighorn sheep, human figures, and geometric designs that rival anything at Newspaper Rock. Unlike the crowds at more famous sites, you’ll likely have these ancient galleries to yourself.

The final 3 miles require high-clearance 2WD minimum, with several rocky sections that favor 4WD. Park at the obvious pullout and follow cairns 0.8 miles up-canyon to the main alcove. BLM asks visitors to stay on designated paths and never touch the rock art. No facilities, no water, and cell service is nonexistent. Best light for photography is late afternoon.
