Glen Canyon National Recreation Area White Canyon Dispersed Area
White Canyon cuts deep into Cedar Mesa’s sandstone, creating a labyrinth of slot canyons, natural bridges, and Ancestral Puebloan ruins. Dispersed camping spreads across slickrock benches above the canyon mouth, with room for 6-8 rigs tucked between juniper and sage. The setting is pure Utah — red rock amphitheaters, silence broken only by wind, and night skies unmarked by light pollution. Hiking trails drop into the canyon system, leading to Natural Bridges National Monument and some of the Southwest’s best backcountry.
Access via rough dirt roads from Highway 95 near Blanding — 18 miles of washboard and embedded rock that demands high clearance. No water, no facilities, no cell service. Spring and fall are ideal; summer temps exceed 100°F on the exposed slickrock. Winter brings snow and ice to the approach roads. Pack water for extended stays. Popular with canyoneers during spring break, otherwise dead quiet.
