Smith Falls plunges 63 feet over moss-covered sandstone into a clear pool below, making it Nebraska’s highest waterfall. The falls are fed by groundwater seepage through the rock layers, creating a steady flow even during dry periods. A short boardwalk trail leads from the parking area through riparian forest to viewing platforms above and below the falls.
Access is via Highway 97 south of Valentine, then 3 miles on a gravel road that’s suitable for most vehicles. The park offers primitive camping and is part of the larger Niobrara National Scenic River system. Spring snowmelt and summer thunderstorms can make the falls more dramatic.
