Salmon Glacier Road — Summit Viewpoint
Drive north from Stewart, BC through the tiny border community of Hyder, Alaska (no customs stop going in, casual check coming back into Canada) and follow the Salmon Glacier Road to a high-point pullout that looks directly down onto the Salmon Glacier — one of the largest road-accessible glaciers in North America. The ice fills the entire valley below you, and on clear days you can see the seracs and crevasse fields in sharp detail. There’s no formal infrastructure at the viewpoint itself — just gravel shoulder, big sky, and the sound of meltwater.
The road is generally accessible to high-clearance 2WD rigs but gets rougher in the upper section — aired-down all-terrains are comfortable, stock street tires are not. Shoot for July through early September before seasonal snow shuts down the upper reaches. The road is not maintained in winter.
Drive-to glacier view that stops traffic cold.
