Salar de Tara — Puna de Atacama Volcanic Lake Flat Dispersed Camp
Salar de Tara sits inside the Los Flamencos National Reserve at roughly 4,300 metres, ringed by jagged volcanic formations and often dusted with pink flamingos working the brine shallows. The flat salt crust and surrounding gravel terraces give overlanders a wide, level spot to pitch without signage or defined sites — you pick your ground, you own it for the night. No infrastructure, no neighbours, no noise. Cold descends fast after dark, even in summer, and wind off the altiplano can be vicious by mid-morning. Bring fuel-based cooking — no wood, no fire rings, and open fires are universally prohibited on the Puna.
Access is via a rough dirt track east of San Pedro de Atacama, passable in a capable high-clearance 4WD. The route deteriorates in wet season (January–March) when flash flooding can cut the track without warning. CONAF technically administers the reserve; no staffing on-site. Fill water in San Pedro — none at the salar. Altitude acclimatisation is non-negotiable at this elevation.
Salt, flamingos, volcanoes — 4,300m solitude.
