Volcán Licancabur — Bolivian-Chilean Border Volcanic Cone Viewpoint
Licancabur is the kind of volcano that stops you mid-track. Rising nearly 6,000 metres above the Altiplano in a textbook cone shape, it dominates the southwestern skyline as you push through the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve toward Laguna Verde. The crater lake near its summit is one of the highest in the world. From the shore of Laguna Verde — a jade-green lake sitting at roughly 4,400m directly at Licancabur’s foot — the reflection on calm mornings is unreal. This is a navigation anchor, a weather indicator, and a landmark that confirms you’re on the right line heading toward the Chilean border at Hito Cajón.
You’re not climbing it without mountaineering gear and permits — it’s a technical high-altitude ascent. But you don’t need to. The viewpoint at Laguna Verde’s western shore puts you within a kilometre of the border post and gives the full frontal. Wind comes fast here at altitude. Fuel up in Uyuni or Tupiza before committing to this stretch — there is nothing out here.
