Rothiemurchus — Loch an Eilein Trailhead and Cairngorm Forest Staging
Loch an Eilein sits inside the Rothiemurchus Estate near Aviemore, ringed by old Scots pine and framed by a 13th-century island castle. The estate road is private tarmac, but the car park is well signed and serves as the launch pad for the loch circuit and deeper forest tracks heading toward the Cairngorm plateau. It’s busy with day-walkers in summer, quieter and genuinely wild-feeling come October when the birches turn. No overnight camping at the loch itself, but it’s a strong staging point before pushing onto Cairngorm or south into the Monadhliath.
Access off the B970 south of Aviemore — follow signs through Inverdruie. Road is paved to the car park. A small visitor centre and toilets are on site in peak season. Pay-and-display parking applies. Estate tracks beyond are foot access only — know your land rights under the Land Reform Act before you push further on wheels.
Castle loch, old pine, Cairngorm at your back.
