Punakaiki Pancake Rocks

Punakaiki’s Pancake Rocks sit right on State Highway 6 on New Zealand’s West Coast, and they’re worth every stop. The layered limestone stacks look like someone piled up massive stone pancakes right at the ocean’s edge, and when the swell is right the blowholes erupt with serious force — spray shooting metres into the air through cracks in the rock platform. The short loop walk (20 minutes) puts you right on the edge of it all with zero buffer. It’s dramatic, it’s loud, and it smells like the ocean deep.

Easy access directly off SH6, sealed road all the way. Free to enter, DOC-managed. The visitor centre at the carpark has facilities. Swell-dependent for the blowhole action — check conditions or ask locally. On busy summer days the carpark fills fast; early morning or late afternoon is quieter and the light is better anyway.
