Piute Gorge Wash — Mojave Road Narrows and Lava Field Viewpoint
Piute Gorge is the geological gut punch of the Mojave Road. The wash cuts through ancient basalt flows and fractured granite, pinching the route between dark lava walls before opening onto the sandy flats beyond. This is the section that separates the pavement tourists from the people who actually know what they’re doing — the wash bottom is loose, rocky, and can hide deep sand pockets after any rain event. Pinyon and barrel cactus cling to the canyon walls above you, and petroglyphs left by the Mojave people are documented in this corridor.
Access is from the Fort Piute trailhead to the west or from Lanfair Valley to the east — you want a high-clearance 4WD rig minimum, and aired-down tires are not optional here. The gorge is impassable after significant flash flood events; always check weather upcanyon before dropping in. No services, no water, no cell signal.
