Mojave National Preserve — Wild Horse Canyon Road Dispersed Camp
Wild Horse Canyon Road cuts northeast from Mid Hills toward the Kelso-Cima Road corridor, and the open BLM land flanking it offers some of the most honest dispersed camping in the Preserve. Flat hardpan and rocky desert scrub, almost no facilities, no shade to speak of — just open Mojave with Joshua trees, cinders, and silence. You’re well inside the Preserve boundary here, which means NPS fire rules apply: no ground fires unless a fire pan is used, pack out every scrap. It stays quiet on weekdays; weekends from October through April can draw more rigs rolling the Mojave Road loop.
Access is via Wild Horse Canyon Road off Black Canyon Road — high-clearance 2WD handles it dry, but rain turns the clay sections greasy fast. No water anywhere close; tank up in Baker or Needles before you commit. Cell signal is essentially nonexistent. Fourteen-day stay limit, no fee, no reservation.
Deep Preserve hardpan, no frills, no crowds.
