Peel River Ferry Crossing — Dempster Highway NWT

Sitting just south of Fort McPherson, the Peel River crossing is one of the defining chokepoints on the Dempster Highway. The Government of NWT runs a free cable ferry during the open-water season — typically late May through October, depending on ice conditions. Miss the window and you’re not crossing. The river is wide, brown, and powerful here, and the far bank drops you straight onto the gravel corridor heading north toward the Arctic Red River and Tsiigehtchic.

Shoulder seasons are the danger zone: freeze-up and breakup can strand rigs for days or weeks when the ferry is pulled but the ice isn’t thick enough to drive. Check the NWT 511 road report religiously before you roll. No fuel here — Fort McPherson is your last stop before the crossing. Cell service is essentially gone.
