Owyhee River — Rome Launch Site and BLM Day Use Area
Rome is barely a wide spot on US-95 in southeastern Oregon, but the BLM river access point here is a legitimate landmark for overlanders cutting through the Owyhee canyonlands or running routes connecting the Leslie Gulch corridor to the Nevada line. The Owyhee River carves deep rust-colored basalt canyon walls here, and the launch site gives you river access, vault toilets, and a flat area to stretch out. Bring your own water or treat from the river — there’s no developed drinking water supply on-site.
Rome sits on US-95 about 30 miles south of Jordan Valley — it’s pavement the whole way but services are essentially nonexistent at Rome itself. Closest fuel is in Jordan Valley to the north or McDermitt, NV to the south. If you’re running the Owyhee Canyonlands overland loop, this is a key anchor point to log. Spring flows make the river crossing downstream impassable; check BLM Vale District conditions before committing.
