Nanih Waiya Mound
This ancient ceremonial mound stands as one of Mississippi’s most significant Native American sites, built by ancestors of the Choctaw people over 1,000 years ago. The earthwork rises about 25 feet and spans roughly an acre at its base, surrounded by interpretive trails through mixed hardwood forest. A small visitor area includes historical markers explaining the site’s cultural importance to the Choctaw Nation as their traditional place of origin.
The site sits on a quiet county road about 8 miles northeast of Philadelphia, Mississippi. Parking is limited to a small gravel area that fits maybe 6-8 vehicles. No facilities on-site, so bring water and pack out everything. The area can get muddy after heavy rains, but the short walk to the mound is manageable year-round.
