Mount Remarkable Gorge Natural Pool

Water Source

Deep permanent pools carved into red quartzite sit at the base of towering gorge walls, creating one of the most reliable water sources in the southern Flinders Ranges. The pools hold crystal-clear water year-round, though flow rates vary dramatically with seasons. During winter and spring, small waterfalls cascade from pool to pool, while summer reduces flow to a trickle. The water requires treatment for drinking but the pools are perfect for a cooling dip after dusty days on the ranges tracks.

Access involves a moderate 2km walk from the Alligator Gorge parking area, though high-clearance vehicles can get closer via management tracks during dry periods. The gorge can be dangerous during flash floods — avoid during and after heavy rains. Popular with day hikers from the Wilmington area but usually quiet in early mornings and late afternoons.
