Mount Evans Scenic Byway Echo Lake
Crystal-clear mountain lake surrounded by alpine tundra and rocky peaks, marking the transition from treeline to true alpine terrain. The historic Echo Lake Lodge sits on the north shore, and there’s a small parking area with vault toilets. This is the last reliable spot to check your rig before the final push to 14,130-foot Mount Evans summit.
Accessed via the Mount Evans Scenic Byway (Highway 5) from Idaho Springs. The road beyond Echo Lake becomes increasingly steep and narrow, with tight switchbacks and no guardrails. Weather can change rapidly above treeline, and the road typically closes by mid-October due to snow.
