Moonville Tunnel Historic Rail Trail
The Moonville Tunnel stands as a 100-foot brick railroad tunnel built in 1856, now abandoned and reportedly haunted by the ghost of a brakeman killed here in 1859. The tunnel and scattered foundation ruins of the old coal mining town make for an eerie but fascinating stop. A well-maintained 3.5-mile rail-trail leads from the Zaleski State Forest parking area to the tunnel, passing through typical Ohio hill country forest.
Park at the Zaleski State Forest trailhead off Hope Furnace Road and follow the Moonville Rail-Trail. The tunnel itself is safe to walk through but bring a flashlight. Ghost hunters often camp nearby hoping for supernatural encounters, making this a popular overnight destination during October. The trail stays open year-round and works for any vehicle.
