Raccoon Creek State Forest Ridge Road Network

Coal country ridge roads in Ohio's wild corner

Easy

The coal trucks quit running these ridgetop roads in the 1980s, but the routes they carved through southeastern Ohio’s hills remain — overgrown, rutted, and perfect for anyone seeking solitude in the state’s forgotten corner. Raccoon Creek State Forest preserves some of the last unbroken Appalachian forest in Ohio, and its network of old coal haul roads provides access to country most residents never see. The main spine runs along Turkey Ridge, connecting the ghost towns of Radcliff and Vinton, with spurs dropping into hollows where abandoned mines slowly surrender to Virginia creeper and wild grapevines.

This is easy to moderate driving suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though seasonal washouts and tree falls require flexibility. The real challenge is navigation — Ohio DNR maintains minimal signage, and GPS often fails under the heavy canopy. Spring wildflowers and fall colors justify the mud; summer brings thick undergrowth and aggressive mosquitoes. Primitive camping is allowed throughout the forest with permission, and scattered clearings provide decent tent sites. You’ll trade convenience for quiet — these ridges see more black bears than people, and cell service is nonexistent. Worth it for the reminder that Ohio has genuine wilderness left.
