Moon Lake State Recreation Site

Small backcountry campground on a pristine alpine lake, accessed by a rough 8-mile side road from the Alaska Highway.

Tucked away on a mirror-still mountain lake about 8 miles off the highway on a rough gravel road that’ll test your suspension. Just 15 sites scattered in the spruce and birch, most right on the water with fire rings and basic tables. No hookups, vault toilets only, but the silence and mountain reflections make it worth the jarring access road. Popular with locals who know to get here early on weekends.

Road requires high-clearance and gets muddy after rain — not recommended for big rigs or low cars. Best fishing is early morning and evening for lake trout and grayling. Open roughly May through October depending on snow, but no services in winter. Bring bug spray — the mosquitoes can be biblical in July.
