Chicken Gold Camp & Outpost

Historic mining town turned tourist stop with fuel, food, and gifts on the Taylor Highway between Tok and Dawson City.

Chicken is one of Alaska’s most famous quirky towns, population fluctuating between 7-17 depending on the season. The Gold Camp & Outpost serves as the town’s hub, offering fuel, basic groceries, hot food, and plenty of gold rush memorabilia. The rustic log buildings and weathered signs give it that authentic frontier feel that draws overlanders along the Taylor Highway.

Open roughly mid-May through September, Chicken sits at mile 66.3 of the Taylor Highway. The fuel prices are steep (expect $1-2 above Fairbanks rates), but it’s your only reliable stop between Tok and the Canadian border. Cash is preferred, though they accept cards. The gift shop stories about the town’s name are worth the stop alone.
