Mirador Cerro Tronador
This granite outcrop overlooks the binational massif of Cerro Tronador, where seven glaciers cascade from the 3,470-meter summit down steep volcanic walls. The viewpoint sits at treeline with panoramic views across Lago Todos los Santos and the ice-blue tongues of Glaciar Negro and Glaciar Alerce. On windless mornings, you can hear the glacial ice cracking and shifting — hence the mountain’s name.
Reached via a rough 12-kilometer track branching from the Puerto Varas-Bariloche road near Petrohué. High-clearance vehicles recommended for the final 3 kilometers through southern beech forest. Best visibility October through March when the Patagonian weather clears.
