McDonald Observatory Visitor Center
Perched at 6,791 feet on Mount Locke, this working observatory offers public star parties, solar viewing, and guided tours of the massive research telescopes. Visitor center has exhibits, gift shop, and observation deck with panoramic views across the Davis Mountains and into Mexico on clear days. Some of the darkest skies in North America — incredible for night photography.
Access via winding paved road that climbs 3,000 feet from Fort Davis. Check website for program schedules and weather closures. Popular with astronomy buffs running the Davis Mountains Scenic Loop or using Fort Davis as a base camp. No camping on-site, but plenty of dispersed options nearby in the national forest.
