Mangaohane Scenic Reserve Campsite

Mangaohane Scenic Reserve sits in the rugged ranges of central Hawke’s Bay on New Zealand’s North Island — this is pastoral high country, tussock ridgelines, and a river valley to yourself. DOC manages the site with basic facilities: a long-drop toilet and flat ground for tents and rooftop setups. No drinking water on site — fill up before you leave the sealed road. It sees enough use to be documented but not enough to be crowded; mid-week you’ll likely have it alone. Fires are subject to seasonal bans — check DOC fire status before you go.

Access involves unsealed Mangaohane Road off SH50 — mostly gravel with some loose and rough sections that’ll rattle a poorly packed rig. High-clearance is advisable, especially after rain when the clay surface turns greasy. Nearest fuel and supplies are in Waipukurau or Taihape depending on your direction. Cell signal goes dark well before you get there.
