Kaweka Forest Park — Makahu Saddle Campsite
Makahu Saddle sits in the Kaweka Forest Park, Hawke’s Bay, North Island — a DOC-managed campsite used by trampers and overlanders pushing into the range via Makahu Road. It’s a no-frills setup: basic toilets, flat ground, and views across the Hawkdun ridgeline that’ll stop you mid-sentence. The Kawekas are genuinely rugged hill country, and this site has the feel of being further from civilization than the drive-time suggests. Bring your own water — none guaranteed on site.
Makahu Road climbs steeply from the Tutaekuri River valley and turns to rough gravel fast. High-clearance is the minimum; after wet weather the clay sections get genuinely greasy and 4WD earns its keep. DOC fees apply — pay via the self-registration envelope or the DOC online system. Best from November through April; snow possible on the saddle in winter months.
