Tongariro Alpine Crossing Trailhead

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4km point-to-point track cutting across the Tongariro massif between Mangatepopo and Ketetahi. The terrain is legitimately alien — active volcanic craters, the vivid Blue and Emerald Lakes, lava fields from the 1886 eruption, and Mt Ngauruhoe looming overhead (the original Mount Doom from Peter Jackson’s films). It’s not technical but it’s exposed and weather in this corridor can go sideways fast regardless of the season.

The Mangatepopo trailhead car park sits off SH47, about 9km from the village of Whakapapa. The road in is paved. During peak season (November–April) the car park fills by 7am — shuttle services from Turangi and Taupo are strongly encouraged and in practice nearly mandatory on busy summer days.
