Manali-Leh Highway — Zing Zing Bar Plateau Dispersed Camp
Zing Zing Bar is a well-known waypoint on the Manali-Leh Highway, sitting in a broad river valley where the Yunam River carves through the Lahaul highlands just before the road pitches up toward Baralacha La. The flat gravel terraces on either side of the valley have been used by overlanders, motorcyclists, and military convoys for decades. It’s exposed, treeless, and cold at night — expect frost even in July. No amenities, no shade, no one coming to help if something goes sideways. The Yunam River provides water but treat it before drinking.
Access is along the main Manali-Leh Highway (BRO-maintained Leh Road / NH-03). Road surface is rough dirt and rock from Darcha onward. High-clearance 4WD recommended — loaded rigs will feel every rut. Best window is late June through September. Snow closes the road above Rohtang by October. No cell service here. Military checkpoints are active along this corridor — carry all permits and ID.
