Baralacha La — Triple Watershed Pass on the Manali-Leh Highway
Baralacha La sits at roughly 4,890 metres on the Manali-Leh Highway and is the first serious altitude test after leaving Jispa. The pass marks a watershed divide between three river systems — Chenab, Yunan, and Bhaga — and on a clear day the surrounding glaciated peaks are as raw and exposed as any road in the Himalayas gets. Suraj Tal, the small glacial lake just below the summit on the Manali side, is worth a stop. Snow banks linger on the road through June and can return by late September, so the window is tight.
Road surface is rough tarmac with gravel patching — passable in a standard 4WD but altitude sickness is the real threat here, not the track. BRO (Project Himank) maintains the pass but closures after overnight snowfall are common. Fuel at Keylong or Jispa before you climb — there is nothing at the top. Cell service drops to zero well before the summit.
First big pass on the Manali-Leh run.
