Mackenzie Delta — East Channel Gravel Bar Dispersed Camp
North of Inuvik on the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway (NWT Highway 10), the Mackenzie Delta fans out into a maze of channels, gravel bars, and low willow scrub. Overlanders heading toward Tuk use pullouts along the highway corridor where the road parallels the East Channel — flat gravel surfaces with open sky, no facilities, and zero crowds. Mosquitoes are savage from late June through August. Bring a full bug suit. Midnight sun means it never truly gets dark in peak summer, which is either magic or madness depending on your mood. Bears are present — hang food or use hard-sided storage.
Access is straightforward: the highway is maintained gravel, passable by any high-clearance vehicle in dry conditions. Road surface can get rough with frost heaves and washboard — plan accordingly. No cell service once you leave Inuvik’s edge. Best window is late June through early September. This is Crown land administered by the GNWT — no permit, no fee, no reservation. Stay limits are not posted but leave-no-trace applies hard up here.
Arctic gravel bar, midnight sun, zero amenities.
