Little Missouri National Grassland Bentonite Hills Dispersed Area
This remote dispersed area sits among the Bentonite Hills’ striking blue and gray clay formations, offering a Mars-like camping experience in the North Dakota badlands. Multiple primitive sites are scattered along dirt two-tracks, with the best spots providing views across the eroded landscape toward the Little Missouri River valley. No amenities whatsoever — pack everything in, pack everything out. The clay becomes impassable when wet.
Access requires navigating unmarked dirt roads south of Medora. High-clearance recommended due to rocky sections and creek crossings that can be muddy after rain. GPS essential as there’s minimal signage. Avoid entirely during or after precipitation — the bentonite clay becomes slick as ice when wet.
