Laguna del Diamante High Altitude Lake
This turquoise glacial lake sits in a stark volcanic landscape at 3,300 meters elevation, with the snow-capped cone of Volcán Maipo perfectly reflected in its still waters. The lake stretches for several kilometers in a dramatic cirque surrounded by jagged peaks and ancient lava flows. Wildlife includes vicuñas, condors, and occasional flamingos during summer months.
The access road from San Rafael climbs relentlessly for 200 kilometers through increasingly barren terrain. High-clearance 4WD required for the final 50 kilometers of rocky switchbacks. Weather can change rapidly at this altitude – snow possible year-round. Carry extra fuel, water, and warm clothing. Best visited October through March when the road is most passable.
