La Rumorosa — Sierra Juárez Grade Summit and Desert Viewpoint

La Rumorosa sits at roughly 4,000 feet where MEX-2 crests the Sierra Juárez escarpment before dropping in a series of steep switchbacks toward Mexicali. The granite boulders here are enormous and stacked like some giant kicked them off the ridge — it’s a legit geological spectacle and a landmark overlanders running the Baja Norte corridor use as a navigation anchor. There’s a Pemex station and a handful of roadside food stalls in the village. Fuel up here — options thin out quickly heading east toward San Felipe or south toward Laguna Hanson.

The grade itself (La Bajada de la Rumorosa) is well-paved but steep, with sharp curves and significant wind exposure. Truck traffic is heavy. High-clearance rigs are fine; trailers need low gear all the way down. The village is small, cell signal is partial, and the place can be bitterly cold and windy in winter. Worth stopping to eat a burrito and take in the view before the descent.
