Kofa National Wildlife Refuge encompasses some of Arizona’s most rugged desert country, anchored by the dramatic Kofa Mountains. The refuge allows dispersed camping throughout most areas, with the famous Palm Canyon trail leading to Arizona’s only native palm grove. Wildlife viewing is excellent — desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, and countless desert species call this place home.
Access requires high-clearance vehicles on most refuge roads. Palm Canyon Road is the main artery, passable by most vehicles. No water, services, or trash collection — pack everything out. Best visited October through March when temperatures are manageable.
