Karakul Lake — KKH Lakeshore Dispersed Camp

Karakul Lake is a high-altitude alpine lake sitting at roughly 3,600 metres on the Chinese Pamir Plateau, flanked by two of Central Asia’s most imposing peaks — Muztagh Ata (7,546m) and Kongur Tagh (7,649m). The reflections at dawn are the kind that make grown overlanders put down their coffee and just stare. Flat gravel and sandy shoreline areas around the lake’s southern and eastern margins serve as established dispersed pull-off spots used by travellers on the KKH for decades. Expect Kyrgyz yurts nearby in summer and the associated local trade in tea and bread. Zero formal facilities — dig a cat hole and pack your trash out.

The lake is directly accessible from the KKH — a short pull-off onto the lakeside flats. Altitude hits hard here; acclimatise before sleeping. Nights are cold even in July. A Border Defence Certificate (边境证) for Taxkorgan is essential — checkpoints before and after the lake are routine. Busy in July–August with Chinese domestic tourists; shoulder seasons are quieter and colder.
