Karakul Lake — Karakoram Highway High-Altitude Lake Viewpoint

Point of Interest

Karakul Lake sits right on the Karakoram Highway at roughly 3,600 metres, making it one of the highest accessible lakes in China and a genuine jaw-dropper. On a clear morning, Muztagh Ata (7,546m) throws its reflection across the dark water and Kongur Tagh frames the northeast. Kyrgyz herders have grazed these shores for centuries and yurts dot the lakeshore in summer. The air is thin — give yourself a day to acclimatise before pushing south toward Khunjerab.

The lake sits on the KKH between Kashgar and Tashkurgan, roughly 190km south of Kashgar. Road is paved here. The main hazard is altitude — do not rush this section if you’ve come straight from Kashgar at 1,200m. Strong winds can kick up fast across the open plateau, reducing visibility and dropping temperatures sharply even in July.

Muztagh Ata mirrored at 3,600m.
