Karakoram Highway — Gez River Gorge Roadside Dispersed Camp
The Gez River Gorge is one of the most dramatic sections of the Karakoram Highway before it climbs toward the Pamir plateau. Overlanders have long used the wide gravel pull-offs along the river’s edge for overnight camps. You’re hemmed in by sheer rust-red canyon walls, the river noise is constant, and the scale of the place is genuinely humbling. No facilities, no signage — just flat gravel, cold river air, and the odd passing truck on the KKH above. Muztagh Ata’s white flanks start to appear as you push deeper into the canyon.
Access is direct off the KKH — no side road required. High-clearance 2WD handles it fine. Cell signal drops to nothing inside the gorge. This is Chinese territory; a valid border permit for Taxkorgan County (Border Defence Certificate) is mandatory before you reach this point. Early morning light on the canyon walls is worth setting the alarm for.
Canyon walls, river roar, zero amenities.
