Ivanhoe Crossing — Ord River Concrete Causeway Ford
Ivanhoe Crossing sits just outside Kununurra on the Ord River and is one of the most-photographed vehicle crossings in Australia. The causeway is deliberately submerged — water flows over the concrete deck year-round, with depth varying dramatically between dry season (ankle-deep) and wet season (impassable and genuinely dangerous). In the dry, it’s a legitimate 4WD experience; in the wet, it’s closed. The surrounding pools are known saltwater crocodile habitat — swimming is absolutely off the table, and keeping dogs and kids well back from the water’s edge is non-negotiable.
Located about 6 km northeast of Kununurra town center via Weaber Plain Road. A mandatory intel stop for anyone staging a Gibb River Road or El Questro run — check local water levels before committing. Road into the crossing is sealed to the crossing itself. Cell coverage is reasonable this close to Kununurra.
Croc country causeway — read it before you roll.
