Cambridge Gulf — Wyndham Tidal Estuary and Crocodile Waters Viewpoint

Point of Interest

Cambridge Gulf is the vast tidal estuary that Wyndham sits on, and the Five Rivers Lookout above town gives you the full picture — the Ord, King, Pentecost, Durack, and Forrest rivers all drain into this salt-flat gulf before it opens to the Timor Sea. The view from the top is one of the most dramatic in the Kimberley: red ramparts dropping straight into crocodile-thick mudflats that stretch to the horizon. This is a genuine working piece of remote Australia, not a manicured viewpoint. The township below is one of WA’s oldest outback ports and barely changed from a century ago.

Access to the Five Rivers Lookout is via a short sealed road off the Great Northern Highway just north of Wyndham. No 4WD required for the lookout itself, but the surrounding flats and tidal creeks demand serious respect — saltwater crocs are prolific and not shy. Dry season only for any exploration off the main road. End-of-Gibb trip fuel and resupply available in Wyndham township, though stock up in Kununurra if you need specifics.

Five rivers, one gulf, crocs everywhere.
