Heavener Runestone Park Ancient Inscription
The Heavener Runestone features carved symbols that have sparked decades of debate about their origin – Viking, Native American, or modern hoax. The stone sits in a natural amphitheater setting reached by a quarter-mile interpretive trail. The small state park includes a visitor center with theories and historical context, plus primitive camping areas in the surrounding oak and pine forest.
Located just off Highway 59 near Heavener, the park provides easy access but limited facilities. The camping areas are first-come, first-served with vault toilets and fire rings but no water hookups. The site makes a good stopping point when exploring the Ouachita National Forest backcountry to the east.
