Hatcher Pass Independence Mine State Historical Park

Historic gold mine ruins at 3,000 feet with alpine camping and spectacular views of the Talkeetna Mountains.

Perched high in Hatcher Pass, this historical park preserves the ruins of Alaska’s Independence Mine, which operated from 1908 to 1951. The site features interpretive trails through collapsing mine buildings, stamp mills, and bunkhouses against a backdrop of jagged peaks and alpine tundra. Several primitive camping areas are scattered around the parking area, offering spectacular sunrise views over the Matanuska Valley.

The winding gravel road up from the Palmer side gets rough and narrow in places — high-clearance vehicles recommended. Snow can linger well into June at this elevation. The pass is notorious for sudden weather changes, so pack layers and be prepared for wind. Campfires are prohibited due to alpine vegetation.
