Hancock Lake Trailhead

Starting point for high-alpine adventures near Leadville, with solid dispersed camping opportunities in the trees.

Sits at treeline around 11,500 feet, marking the start of several high-country routes including access to some gnarly 4×4 tracks toward the Continental Divide. Small parking area that fills up fast in summer, with vault toilet and trailhead signage. Dispersed camping scattered in the trees below the lot—find a flat spot and you’re golden.

Rough dirt road the last few miles, definitely need high-clearance and probably 4WD if it’s been wet. About 45 minutes west of Leadville via rough forest roads. Season’s short up here—usually July through September—but when it’s good, it’s spectacular. No water, pack everything in.
