Halls Creek Overlook — Waterpocket Fold Southern Terminus Viewpoint

In the final miles before Notom-Bullfrog Road descends toward Bullfrog Basin, the terrain opens into a series of overlooks above Halls Creek drainage. This is where the Waterpocket Fold makes its last stand before the land drops away toward Lake Powell. The views are wide and brutal — carved Navajo sandstone, dry creek beds, zero vegetation except scattered junipers, and total silence. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why you drove 40 miles on a washboard dirt road in the first place.

No formal developed viewpoint, no signage, no restrooms. You’re reading the land and pulling over where it makes sense. The road surface here is typically the roughest of the entire route — sandy wash crossings and loose rock — and requires high clearance. In wet conditions this lower section can become impassable even for 4WD rigs. Fuel up in Torrey before you start; the next gas is Bullfrog Marina, and that’s only open seasonally. Verify marina operations before you depend on it.
