Burr Trail Junction — Notom Road Mile 34 Crossroads
At roughly mile 34 of the Notom-Bullfrog Road, the pavement that comes west from Boulder over the Burr Trail switchbacks meets the dirt bench road in a wide open junction. There’s nothing here — no services, no shade structure, no water — but it’s one of the most consequential intersections in southern Utah overlanding. Head east and you’re still on track to Bullfrog Marina. Head west and you’re committed to one of the most dramatic paved-then-dirt climbs in Utah, up through the Capitol Reef backcountry into the Escalante watershed.
The junction itself sits in open slickrock and sand terrain with stunning views north toward the Waterpocket Fold and south toward Muley Twist Canyon. Zero cell signal. Zero shade. Mark it as a waypoint and use it as a checkpoint to assess fuel, water, and tire condition before committing to either direction. High-clearance recommended west of here on the Burr Trail unpaved stretch.
