Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve

Florida's wildest swamp preserve with rare orchids, ancient cypress, and primitive backcountry access via Jane's Scenic Drive.

Fakahatchee Strand protects the largest old-growth bald cypress forest in Florida, accessible via the 11-mile Jane’s Scenic Drive that penetrates deep into this cathedral swamp. The unpaved road passes towering cypress draped in Spanish moss, royal palms, and over 40 species of wild orchids. Ghost orchids bloom here in summer, drawing botanists from across the Southeast. Wildlife includes black bears, Florida panthers, and abundant wading birds.

Jane’s Scenic Drive requires high-clearance vehicles during wet season when standing water covers sections of the limestone road. The preserve offers no camping, but serves as a stunning day trip from nearby dispersed camps in Big Cypress. Best visited November through April when mosquitoes are manageable and orchids visible.
