Eureka Valley Sand Dunes Death Valley
The Eureka Valley Dunes are the tallest sand dunes in California, reaching 680 feet above the valley floor. These remote dunes in Death Valley National Park are famous for their ‘singing’ — a low-frequency humming sound produced when sand avalanches down the steep faces. The dunes cover roughly 3 square miles and offer phenomenal stargazing with zero light pollution. Getting there requires 44 miles of rough, washboard dirt roads that can be punishing on both vehicle and passengers.
Access is via South Eureka Road from Highway 168, then Death Valley Road — high-clearance recommended though not required in dry conditions. The final approach can be sandy. Camping is prohibited on or near the dunes themselves, but dispersed camping is allowed elsewhere in the valley. Summer temperatures are extreme; spring and fall offer the best conditions for exploration.
