Dragon Run Natural Spring
Dragon Run flows through one of Virginia’s most intact freshwater swamp systems, with several spring-fed tributaries providing clear, cool water year-round. The main access point features a small clearing where the creek runs shallow over a sandy bottom — ideal for filtering and collecting water. The surrounding swamp hosts bald cypress, river birch, and abundant wildlife including river otters and wood ducks.
Reach via Essex County Route 17 to Dragon Run State Park, then a quarter-mile walk on marked trail. Water flow is most reliable spring through fall. The area can be buggy in summer, so bring repellent. Test water before drinking as upstream agriculture may affect quality.
